Some sand is manufactured by fish that ingest stony coral while feeding on the algae growing on it. A rusty parrot fish (Scarus ferrugnieus) chews off tiny chunks with its strong beak, swallowing bits of dead coral as a chicken does gravel. Grinding plates in the fishs throat break down the coral. Then, having extracted nourishing organic materials from the algae, the fish passes the residue into the sea. See proj# 05185, consec# 50008, p. 135 lo for the latter process.
